Why We Created Supervision Excellence: Supporting Clinical Supervisors and the Next Generation of Therapists

August of 2021.

That was when I was assigned my first resident in counseling at a previous job. I had completed my required training and submitted my application to the board in May and I had been eagerly awaiting this day ever since.  I remember searching and searching for resources to help me start my journey as a supervisor and came up empty handed.

My lived experience was helpful - essentially I knew what kind of supervisor I didn’t want to be and what I had found helpful in my own journey. I also wasn’t entirely new to the concept of supervision, as I had supported clinicians in other capacities before, but this felt different, and I wanted as many resources as possible to assist me in helping new clinicians grow into the role.

Ultimately, what I discovered was that the resources were sparse. The main requirements to be able to supervise a resident in training were two years of independent clinical practice and 20 hours of CEUs focused on supervision and it was quite clear that all approved training were not created equal. This left an uneven playing field. Furthermore, there was limited support after the training was completed. It very much felt like every person for themselves - and if you didn’t have a network behind you, then there was nowhere to turn. This was particularly true during the pandemic when things moved online, but even outside of that counseling can be an isolating profession and workplace culture can work to cure that or enhance the feelings of isolation.

Through my experience in supervision, I realized that I loved teaching, consultation, and coaching - and was passionate about helping create clinical excellence through supervision. It was great to do that individually, but I wanted to work on a larger scale to help grow the field of professional counseling and that is how Supervision Excellence came to be.

Through various conversations, we conceptualized a toolkit to support new and seasoned clinical supervisors alike. It started as a passion project in 2023 that took hold and never really let go, even though we have gone through a myriad of life changes since its inception. We are so excited to introduce everyone to what we have to offer. The toolkit is broken down into quarters and covers all aspects of supervision and preparing a resident for independent practice. It can be purchased one quarter at a time, or in various bundles. We are also available for individual or business consultations. Visit our FAQ for more information and contact us with specific questions.
